Succulent growing guide
Desert rose is quick to germinate when it is warm and slow to forgive cold, wet soil. This guide covers sowing depth, temperature, a gritty seed mix and the early care that turns a seedling into a fat-based caudex plant.
Adenium seeds are slender, about 1 cm long, with a tuft of hairs at each end. Pull off the hairs or leave them on; either way lay the seed flat. Sow as soon as you can. Adenium seed is often described as short-lived, and although one Brazilian lot kept its 90% germination for a year in a sealed jar at 25 °C (77 °F), you cannot know how a packet has been stored. Keep any spare seed dry and sealed.
Not needed. The seed coat is thin and takes up water quickly.
Not needed. Desert rose comes from dry tropical Africa and Arabia and has no cold requirement; cold actually damages the seed.
Optional and short. In the same study seeds absorbed most of their first water within about 5 hours, so an overnight or multi-day soak gives no benefit. If you soak, use warm water for a few hours and sow immediately.
Keep the tray at 25-30 °C (77-86 °F). At 30 °C (86 °F) the root emerged within 48-72 hours; at 15 and 20 °C (59 and 68 °F) seeds began to deteriorate after five days and only a few sprouted. In India, sow in the hot season or before the monsoon; in cooler climates use a heat mat or a warm windowsill.
Lay seeds flat and cover with about 0.5 cm (1/5 in) of mix. One seed per cell avoids root disturbance later.
Free-draining and mineral. In a Brazilian trial at 25 °C (77 °F), seed sown in sand reached 63% germination against 37% in garden soil and 17% in a peat-based commercial mix, and sand-grown seedlings had the thickest caudex at 60 days. Use coarse sand, or a cactus mix with plenty of perlite or grit.
Evenly moist, never wet. Water the mix before sowing, then mist or bottom-water lightly. Waterlogged mix is the main cause of rot and seedling collapse.
Light is not required for germination, since covered seed sprouts well. Give strong light the day seedlings appear, or they stretch.
At 25 °C (77 °F) the seed coat split and the root appeared on day 4, and seed leaves were exposed by day 7. Most seeds are up within 14 days; seed still bare after three weeks in warmth is unlikely to come.
Pot seedlings individually once they have a few true leaves and a visible swollen base. Use a small pot with several drainage holes and a cactus or succulent mix, as NC State Extension recommends. Lift seedlings gently: the young caudex and root bruise easily.
Grow on in full sun, six hours or more daily, and water when the mix has dried on top. Adenium thrives at 24-35 °C (75-95 °F). Many growers raise the seedling slightly at each repotting to show off the thickening base. Seed-grown plants are slower to flower than grafted plants.
Adenium has a milky latex. NC State Extension lists all parts as poisonous if eaten (cardiac glycosides) and the latex as a cause of contact dermatitis. Wear gloves when pruning or repotting, wash tools and hands, and keep plants away from children and pets.
Thai cultivars such as Thai Soco are selected forms kept true by grafting. Seedlings from them will vary in flower colour, petal count and caudex shape, so each one is unique. If you want an exact copy of a favourite seedling, graft or root cuttings from it later.
UF/IFAS notes that adenium will not flower in low light. A south-facing balcony or open terrace suits it well in India.
Where winters are cool, reduce watering for three to four months and resume watering and feeding when warm weather returns.
