Seed preparation
If you start from berries, wear gloves (the shrubs are spiny), crush the ripe fruit in water and float or sieve away the pulp. Dry the seed on the surface only, then sow or store it. Cleaned seed rots less than whole berries.

Fruit shrub growing guide
Barberry seed is easy to clean but slow to wake: temperate species need a winter chill, and Himalayan species germinate best after a few months of rest. Sow shallowly in a cool, bright spot and expect two seasons before the seedlings are ready to plant.

Not needed. Seed manuals break barberry dormancy with cold stratification or a rest period, not by scratching the coat.
Temperate garden species need moist cold stratification at about 1-5 °C (34-41 °F): roughly 40 days for common barberry, 60 days for Korean and 90 days for Japanese barberry, 1-3 months for most others. Mix the seed with damp sand in a bag in the refrigerator. For the Himalayan B. aristata, fresh seed germinated poorly in trials and best after about 3 months of dry storage; sowing in autumn outdoors in the hills gives the same effect.
Not needed. Moisture during stratification or in the seed tray is enough.
Indian barberry (B. aristata) reached its highest germination at 20 °C (68 °F), with the best seedling emergence at 25 °C (77 °F); at 28 °C (82 °F) germination dragged on for about a month. On the Indian plains sow in the cool season; in the hills sow in autumn or early spring.
The USDA seed manual covers barberry seed with 0.3-1.3 cm (1/8-1/2 in) of soil plus a thin layer of sand. Because Indian barberry germinates better in light, keep to the shallow end: press the seed in and cover it only thinly.
A free-draining seed compost or a mix of garden soil and sand. Barberry tolerates most soils but not waterlogging.
Keep evenly moist, never wet. Mulch outdoor autumn-sown beds lightly until germination starts, so the surface does not dry or crust.
Give bright, indirect light after sowing. Indian barberry is facultatively light-requiring: it germinates in the dark, but better in light.
After-ripened Indian barberry seed finished germinating in about 12 days at 25 °C (77 °F). Test germination of other barberries runs from about 3 weeks to over 3 months, so do not discard a tray early.
Move seedlings into individual pots or a nursery bed once they have a few true leaves. Handle them by the leaves; even young plants soon develop spines.
The USDA seed manual recommends field planting barberry as two-year-old (2+0) nursery stock. Expect losses: in one common barberry sowing only 22% of the seeds became shrubs.
Plant deciduous species while dormant and evergreens in spring or autumn, in full sun or partial shade on moist but well-drained soil. Seed-raised plants usually take at least two years to flower.
B. aristata and B. lycium are Himalayan mid-hill shrubs and suit hill gardens in India better than the hot plains. Temperate species such as B. thunbergii need a cold winter and can lose new growth to late frosts.
Barberry makes a dense, spiny hedge. Prune deciduous species in mid to late winter and evergreens after flowering; clipping hedges in summer removes the berries.
Spread 5-7.5 cm (2-3 in) of organic mulch each spring, kept away from the stems. Wear thick gloves when weeding underneath: fallen spines hide in the litter.
Many barberries, especially common barberry (B. vulgaris), are alternate hosts of black stem rust of wheat and other grains; Korean and Japanese barberry are resistant. Do not plant susceptible barberries beside cereal crops.
Rest or chill barberry seed before sowing, then sow it shallowly in a cool, bright place.
Temperate species do: 1-3 months at 1-5 °C in damp sand. Himalayan Indian barberry germinated best after about 3 months of dry storage, so autumn sowing or a short rest works well.
After pretreatment, Indian barberry germinated within about 12 days at 25 °C. Other species can take several weeks, so keep the tray moist for at least three months.
It is a Himalayan mid-hill shrub (the studied wild populations grew at about 1,200-2,400 m), so it is best suited to hill gardens. The hot plains are outside its natural range; if you try it there, sow in the cool season.
Not long at room temperature: B. lycium seed lost all viability within 18 months in one study. Stored dry in a sealed container just above freezing, barberry seed has kept for at least four years.
