Himalayan meadow rue is a tall, airy perennial of cool, shaded ravines from Pakistan to China. Its seed is slow and needs a cold, moist spell before it wakes up, so patience and a cool spot matter more than anything else.
Sow fresh seed as soon as you can. In every meadow rue studied so far, the embryo is tiny and unfinished when the seed is shed and has to grow inside the seed before it can germinate. Korean and North American species share this same dormancy type. No germination study exists for Himalayan meadow rue itself, so this guide follows the genus.
Not needed. The block to germination sits in the embryo, not in a hard seed coat.
Recommended. In the Korean meadow rue Thalictrum rochebrunianum var. grandisepalum, more than 4 weeks at 1-5 °C (34-41 °F) broke dormancy, and the embryos then grew quickly in warmer conditions. A US nursery protocol for Thalictrum occidentale used 90 days at 1-2 °C (34-36 °F) in damp peat, and seeds began sprouting in the cold after 80-90 days. At home, mix the seed with damp sand or vermiculite, seal it in a labelled bag and keep it in the refrigerator, not the freezer, for 6-12 weeks. From week 6, check weekly and sow any seeds that have sprouted.
Not needed. Researchers have replaced the cold period with gibberellic acid, but a cold, moist spell is simpler and works without chemicals.
After the cold period, give mild conditions. The Korean study used about 25 °C (77 °F) by day and 15 °C (59 °F) by night, and outdoors the seeds germinated in early spring. On the Indian plains, sow in the coolest months; hot, still conditions are not suitable.
Press the seed onto the surface and cover it with only a dusting of fine grit or vermiculite. The US protocol used a very thin layer that lets light through and keeps the surface damp.
A free-draining seed mix with added grit or perlite. Meadow rue seedlings grow slowly and rot easily if the mix stays soggy.
Keep the mix evenly damp but never waterlogged. Water from below or mist the surface.
Bright, indirect light. Keep young seedlings out of hot midday sun.
Expect uneven emergence. In the US protocol nearly all treated seeds had germinated 80-100 days after the cold treatment began. Keep the tray for a full season before giving up.
Move each seedling into its own small pot once it has its first true leaves, handling it by a leaf, not the stem. Plant out in the cool season when the roots fill the pot; in the US protocol this took about 4 months after germination, at 4-6 true leaves and about 9 cm (3.5 in) tall.
Keep young plants in partial shade and feed every two weeks with a weak, balanced liquid fertiliser. The first year is mostly leaf and root growth, so do not worry if the plant stays small.
Himalayan meadow rue comes from cool temperate forests and shaded ravines. In India it suits hill gardens best; on the plains grow it in a large pot in bright shade and treat the cool season as its growing season.
In cold areas, sow in pots in autumn and leave them outdoors in a sheltered, shaded place. Related meadow rues germinated in early spring after a natural winter.
Mark each pot with the sowing date. Slow, staggered emergence is normal for the genus, and late seedlings are worth keeping.
Plants form a clump with tall, fine stems, so choose a spot sheltered from strong wind.
