Palm growing guide
Canary Island date palm and the Indian wild date palm are both easy to raise from fresh seed if they get steady warmth and moisture. Both germinate in the remote way, sending a root-like stalk deep into the pot, so give them deep containers and patience.
Use seed from fully ripe fruit: Brazilian research on Canary Island date palm found that seed from brown, fully ripe fruits germinated better than seed from orange, half-ripe fruits. Remove every trace of the fleshy pulp, which can harbour mould and slow germination, then sow while the seed is still fresh.
Not needed. Phoenix seed is hard but takes up water on its own when soaked. Filing or acid treatment risks damaging the embryo.
Not needed. These are warm-climate palms; cold treatment slows them down.
Recommended. UF/IFAS lists water soaks of 1-7 days, with daily water changes, as helpful for several Phoenix species, and an ICAR study in hot, arid Rajasthan found that pre-soaking increased germination and shortened germination time in Indian date palm. Sow straight after soaking; letting soaked seed dry out again can send it back into dormancy.
UF/IFAS gives 29-35 °C (85-95 °F) as the best range for palm seed and recommends bottom heat. For Canary Island date palm, a thermogradient study found an optimum near 28 °C (82 °F), with germination failing below about 9.5 °C (49 °F) or above about 35.5 °C (96 °F). In most of India both palms germinate readily from spring to the monsoon without extra heat.
Cover the seed with a thin layer of mix so it never dries out, as UF/IFAS advises for seed germinated in sun. Use deep pots or long tubes rather than shallow trays.
A free-draining mix; UF/IFAS uses equal parts peat and perlite. Sand mixed with a little compost or coir works well in hot climates.
Keep uniformly moist. UF/IFAS warns against alternating wet and dry spells and against standing water.
Light is not required for germination. A clear cover or a warm greenhouse bench helps hold heat and humidity.
UF/IFAS reports that fresh Canary Island date palm seed germinates in 2-3 months at 29-35 °C (85-95 °F). In the ICAR trial, Indian date palm germinated about a week later than date palm under the same conditions. Germination within a batch is uneven, so keep the pot going for several months.
Both species germinate remotely: a stalk-like cotyledon grows down from the seed and the shoot and root appear from its swollen tip, often several centimetres below the seed. Do not pull the seed to look, and do not cut it off.
Pot seedlings on individually once they have 1-2 strap leaves, before roots circle the pot. Keep the root-stem junction at soil level and do not prune roots, as UF/IFAS advises. Give 30-50% shade for a few weeks after potting.
No fertilizer is needed for the first two months after germination. Then feed lightly with a palm fertilizer containing potassium and magnesium, and move plants gradually into full sun.
Canary Island date palm is slow, heavy-trunked (60-90 cm or 2-3 ft thick) and reaches 12-15 m (40-50 ft), with spiny leaf bases; it is hardy to about -7 °C (20 °F). Indian date palm is slimmer, also reaches about 15 m (50 ft), tolerates heat, drought and poorer soils, and is hardy to about -9 °C (15 °F).
The lowest leaflets of both species are hard spines. Plant away from paths and wear gloves when handling older plants.
