Growing from Seed

Sowing: Sow directly into fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Cover seeds about 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) deep, keep the seedbed evenly moist, and thin seedlings after they develop true leaves.

Spacing: For full-sized plants, allow about 15 cm (6 inches) between plants and about 30 cm (12 inches) between rows. Closer planting can be used for smaller leaves, with thinning as plants grow.

Growing Conditions: Leaf beet grows best with regular moisture and moderate temperatures. Local sowing dates should follow the cool or mild growing season for your region.

Harvest: Pick outer leaves while they are tender and leave the central growing point intact. This allows established plants to continue producing leaves for later harvests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is All Green palak the same species as true spinach?

No. Indian plant-variety authorities document All Green under palak, Beta vulgaris var. bengalensis. True spinach is Spinacia oleracea; the two crops are related but botanically distinct.

Can the leaves be harvested more than once?

Yes. ICAR-IARI describes Pusa All Green as suitable for multiple harvesting. Take outer leaves and preserve the central growing point so the plant can continue producing foliage.
