Why Grow Beit Alpha?
- Classic cucumber type: Middle Eastern slicer for fresh-market use
- Fruit: Cylindrical, slightly tapered, glossy green cucumbers
- Reference size: Approximately 15 × 5 cm (6 × 2 in)
- Growth: Warm-season annual vine suitable for a trellis
- Packet: 25 seeds
How to Grow
Sowing: Sow outdoors after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed to about 18°C (65°F) or higher. Plant the seeds about 1.5 cm (½–¾ in) deep. Keep the seedbed evenly moist while the seeds germinate, without leaving the soil waterlogged.
Position: Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Cucumbers grow best with regular, even moisture, especially while vines are flowering and fruits are developing.
Support: Allow room for the vines to spread or guide them onto a trellis. A support keeps the growing area tidy and makes young cucumbers easier to see and harvest.
Harvest: Pick the fruits while they are young, firm and glossy. The historical cultivar reference lists Beit Alpha at about 55 days to maturity, but actual timing varies with temperature, sunlight, soil and care. Check the plants frequently and harvest regularly before fruits become oversized.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Beit Alpha cucumber?
Beit Alpha is a Middle Eastern slicing type. This group produces smaller fresh-market cucumbers that are generally uniform green and commonly smoother than traditional pickling cucumbers.
When can I expect the first harvest?
The historical cultivar description records approximately 55 days to maturity. Treat this as a guide rather than a guarantee, because local climate and growing conditions affect development.
Can the vines be grown on a trellis?
Yes. Cucumbers can be trained onto a sturdy trellis, which saves ground space and makes the fruits easier to find and pick.
