Growing from Seed

Starting seeds: Start eggplant indoors about 8–10 weeks before the intended transplanting time. Sow in a clean seed-starting medium and keep the medium warm, around 27°C, while germination takes place. Give seedlings strong, consistent light after emergence.

Transplanting: Move established seedlings outdoors after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 16°C. Harden seedlings gradually before planting them in their final position.

Position: Choose a sunny site with fertile, well-drained soil. Maintain regular moisture without leaving the roots waterlogged. A large container can also be used when it provides drainage, adequate root space and consistent watering.

Plant care: Space plants to allow light and airflow, remove competing weeds and support stems if they become heavily loaded. Growth rate, fruit form and harvest timing can vary with the seed lot, temperature, soil, moisture and local climate.

Harvest and Uses: Harvest eggplant fruit when it reaches a useful size and remains firm. Eggplant is commonly cooked in curries, stir-fries, grilled dishes, stews and roasted preparations.

What You Receive: One labelled packet containing 100 Small Cluster Brinjal Eggplant seeds. This product contains seeds only, not seedlings or harvested fruit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are brinjal, eggplant and aubergine the same crop?

Yes. These are widely used common names for Solanum melongena; the preferred name varies by country and region.

Why is eggplant often started indoors?

Eggplant needs warm conditions and a long growing period. Starting seeds indoors gives seedlings time to develop before outdoor soil and air temperatures are suitable.

When can seedlings be transplanted?

Transplant after local frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 16°C. Gradual hardening helps seedlings adjust to outdoor conditions.
