Growing from Seed

Sowing: Sow thinly in moist seed compost or prepared garden soil. For outdoor rows, sow lettuce about 1 cm deep. Keep the surface evenly moist during germination, but avoid leaving the growing medium waterlogged. Indoor sowing in trays or modules can give seedlings a protected start when outdoor conditions are unsuitable.

Spacing: Thin or transplant seedlings so the developing rosettes have room and airflow. A general lettuce range is about 15-30 cm between plants, with closer spacing suitable for smaller leaf harvests and wider spacing for larger plants. Follow local conditions and the harvest size you want rather than crowding mature plants.

Position: Choose fertile, moisture-retentive soil that drains freely. A sunny position is generally suitable during mild weather, while light shade during the hottest part of the day can help in warm periods. Lettuce can also be grown in containers; use a container at least 30 cm wide, filled with moist, free-draining compost.

Watering and temperature: Maintain steady moisture because lettuce has a shallow root system and growth can slow under water stress. Hot, dry weather can encourage premature flowering and bitter leaves. Use locally suitable cool or mild sowing periods, water during dry spells, and consider light shade when temperatures rise.

Succession sowing: Small, repeated sowings can spread the harvest instead of producing all plants at once. Sow a short row about every two weeks where the local season allows.

Harvest and Uses

Harvest clean outer leaves as they reach the size you prefer, leaving the central growing point intact for continued leaf production, or cut the whole rosette. Loose-leaf lettuce is commonly used fresh in salads, sandwiches, wraps, and garnishes. Wash harvested leaves before serving.

What You Receive: One labelled packet containing 100 Grand Rapids Leaf Lettuce seeds. This product contains seeds only, not seedlings, harvested leaves, containers, or growing supplies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grand Rapids a leaf lettuce?

Yes. Grand Rapids belongs to the green leaf or leaf-lettuce group rather than the crisphead or Romaine groups.

Can Grand Rapids lettuce grow in a container?

Yes. Use a wide container with drainage holes, moisture-retentive compost, good light, and regular watering. Thin seedlings so each plant has room to develop.

Can I harvest individual leaves?

Yes. Loose-leaf lettuce can be picked from the outside while the centre continues growing. You may also harvest the entire rosette when it reaches your preferred size.

Why does lettuce bolt?

Hot, dry conditions can trigger premature flowering. Consistent moisture, locally suitable sowing dates, and light shade during the hottest weather can help reduce stress.
