Packet details
- 100 Green Romaine lettuce seeds
- Botanical name: Lactuca sativa
- Type: green Romaine / cos lettuce
- Suitable for garden beds, raised beds and larger containers
- Seeds only; plants and growing supplies are not included
Sowing and care
- Sow thinly about 1 cm deep in moist seed compost or prepared soil.
- Keep the seedbed evenly moist while seeds germinate.
- Thin or transplant seedlings to provide room and airflow.
- Grow during locally suitable mild or cool weather in fertile, moisture-retentive soil that drains freely.
Spacing can be closer for young leaf harvests and wider when growing fuller heads. Hot, dry conditions can encourage bolting, so regular watering and light shade during the hottest weather may help.
Harvest and kitchen use
Pick clean outer leaves as needed or cut a developed head when it reaches the size you prefer. Romaine is widely used in Caesar-style salads, mixed salads, wraps, sandwiches and grilled dishes. Wash harvested leaves before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Romaine the same as cos lettuce?
Romaine and cos are commonly used names for the same upright lettuce type.
Can I harvest individual leaves?
Yes. Pick sound outer leaves while leaving the central growing point intact, or allow plants to develop into fuller heads.
Can Romaine grow in containers?
Yes. Use a container large enough for the intended harvest size, fertile compost that drains freely, and consistent moisture.
Why is my Romaine flowering early?
Hot, dry conditions can encourage lettuce to bolt. Regular watering and some shade during the hottest part of the day may help in warm weather.
