Packet details
- 100 Iceberg crisphead lettuce seeds
- Botanical name: Lactuca sativa
- Type: green crisphead / Iceberg lettuce
- Suitable for garden beds and raised beds; larger containers can also be used
- Seeds only; plants and growing supplies are not included
Sowing and care
- Sow thinly about 1 cm deep in moist seed compost or prepared soil.
- Keep the seedbed evenly moist through germination.
- Thin or transplant seedlings with enough room for heads to develop without crowding.
- Grow during a locally suitable mild or cool season in fertile, moisture-retentive soil that drains freely.
Hot, dry conditions can encourage premature flowering and reduce leaf quality. Regular watering and some light shade during the hottest weather may help.
Harvest and kitchen use
Harvest when the head is firm enough for your preferred use. Crisp leaves work well in wedge salads, sandwiches, burgers, wraps and shredded garnishes. Wash harvested leaves before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of lettuce is Iceberg?
Iceberg is a crisphead lettuce type, known for forming a rounded head with firm, crisp leaves.
Why is spacing important?
Hearting lettuces need room to form a head. Thin or transplant crowded seedlings and follow spacing guidance appropriate to your growing method.
Can Iceberg lettuce grow in a container?
Yes, provided the container is large enough for the mature plant and filled with fertile, moisture-retentive compost that drains freely.
Why is my lettuce bolting?
