Packet details
- 100 Lollo Bionda lettuce seeds
- Botanical name: Lactuca sativa 'Lollo Bionda'
- Type: green frilled loose-leaf lettuce
- Suitable for garden beds, raised beds and containers
- Seeds only; plants and growing supplies are not included
Sowing and care
- Sow thinly about 1 cm deep in moist seed compost or prepared soil.
- Keep the seedbed evenly moist, without leaving it waterlogged.
- Thin or transplant seedlings so each rosette has space and airflow.
- Grow during locally suitable mild or cool weather. In hot periods, light afternoon shade and regular watering can help reduce stress and premature flowering.
Harvest and kitchen use
Pick clean outer leaves while leaving the centre to continue growing, or harvest a fuller rosette when it reaches the size you prefer. The curly green leaves add texture to salads, sandwiches, wraps and garnishes. Wash harvested leaves before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Lollo Bionda a heading lettuce?
It is generally grown as a loose-leaf lettuce with an open rosette of curled green leaves, rather than as a dense Iceberg-style head.
Can I grow it in a container?
Yes. Lettuce can be grown in containers filled with moist, free-draining compost. Allow enough room for the rosette and keep the compost consistently moist.
Why is my lettuce starting to flower?
Hot, dry conditions can encourage lettuce to bolt, or flower prematurely. Regular watering and some shade during the hottest part of the day may help in warm conditions.
Can I harvest individual leaves?
Yes. Loose-leaf lettuce can be picked a few leaves at a time while the central growing point remains intact.
