Growing from Seed

Sowing: Direct sow at a locally suitable planting time. Cover the seeds with about 3 mm (one-eighth inch) of soil and keep the surface consistently moist while seedlings emerge.

Germination: Parsley can germinate slowly, and seed freshness affects the timing. University of Minnesota Extension gives a typical range of two to five weeks and notes that soaking seed in warm water for up to 24 hours before sowing may speed the process.

Light and soil: Choose a sunny position with six to eight hours of direct light where practical. Parsley also tolerates light shade. Use well-drained soil rich in organic matter and do not allow established plants to dry out completely.

Spacing and containers: Thin or transplant seedlings when they are about 5-8 cm high, leaving approximately 25-30 cm between plants. Parsley can also grow in a bright container with drainage holes and regular watering.

Harvest and Uses: Snip sound outer stalks close to the ground while leaving the centre to continue growing. Fresh flat-leaf parsley can be used as a garnish or flavouring in salads and cooked dishes.

This product contains seeds only, not live plants or harvested leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can parsley seed take to germinate?

Germination commonly takes two to five weeks and varies with seed freshness and growing conditions. Keep the seedbed moist and mark the row so the slow-emerging seedlings are easy to identify.

Can Italian flat-leaf parsley grow in a container?

Yes. Use a bright position, a container with drainage holes, and a well-drained growing medium. Water regularly without leaving the roots waterlogged.

How should parsley leaves be harvested?

Cut the outer stalks close to the ground and leave the centre intact. This method allows new leaves to continue developing through the growing season.
