Sandal Wood Red, Chandan Red Seeds

Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) is a slow-growing deciduous tree with pinnate foliage, small yellowish flower clusters, and flat seed pods.

Also known as: Red sanders, Red saunders, Red sandalwood, Rakta chandan, Lal chandan, Raktachandana, Yerra chandanam, Senchandanam and Ruby wood.

For cultivation, choose warm tropical or subtropical conditions, full sun, and a position with room for a spreading crown. Use a freely draining sandy or loamy medium that is kept lightly moist while seedlings establish. Freshly sown containers should have drainage and good air movement. Natural seed lots vary, so emergence speed and the number of seedlings depend on pretreatment, temperature, moisture, and the grower's conditions.

Seed starting: Lightly scarify the hard coat, then soak the seeds in warm water for about 24 hours. Sow 1–2 cm deep and keep the medium warm, around 25–30°C. Label the container with the sowing date, keep it out of standing water, and check moisture regularly. Do not discard a sound pot simply because individual seeds emerge at different times.

After emergence, Move established seedlings into deeper pots without disturbing the developing roots. Increase light gradually, water when the surface begins to dry, and protect young plants from cold or prolonged saturation. Plan long-term placement carefully because this is a woody tree rather than a short-season ornamental.

Seeds are intended for propagation. Before planting outdoors, confirm that the species and your growing method are suitable for your climate, available space, and local rules.
