Frequently asked questions
When should I sow ashwagandha seeds in India?
In the late rainy season. TNAU raises nurseries in June-July; a Hyderabad trial found mid-August sowing better than end of August. The seed needs warmth to germinate.
Why did my ashwagandha seeds not germinate?
Usually cold or waterlogged soil. Trials show germination close to zero at 10 °C (50 °F) and about 95% at 30 °C (86 °F). Sow shallow in a warm, well-drained bed.
How long until I can harvest the roots?
About 150-180 days after sowing, when the leaves dry and the berries turn yellow-red.
Can I grow ashwagandha in a pot?
Yes, as one plant per deep pot in light, sandy, well-drained mix in full sun. Water sparingly; wet soil causes rot.
