Deglet nour dates Seeds

These are seeds of Deglet Nour, a date of the date palm Phoenix dactylifera (family Arecaceae) known for translucent golden-brown, semi-dry fruit. A palm from seed takes several years before it can fruit, and the seed itself needs weeks to sprout.

Also known as: Royal Date, Queen of Dates, Date palm, Khajur (Hindi, Urdu), Tamr (Arabic), Dátil (Spanish), Datte (French), Dattero (Italian), Dattel (German).

Soak, then wait

Soak the seeds in warm water for 48 hours before sowing. For the species, germination typically starts after about 21–26 days and is complete after 38–40 days.

Where to sow and grow

• Sandy or loamy soil with excellent drainage.
• A warm, sunny spot; the palm suits arid and semi-arid climates.
• Steady moisture while the seedlings are young; deep watering later.
• In the ground, at least 4–6 m between palms.

What Deglet Nour fruit is like

The parent variety gives dates about 3–5 cm long, golden to amber, with a firm, semi-dry texture and a mild caramel-honey taste. They are firmer than soft dates such as Medjool. The variety comes from North Africa, particularly Algeria and Tunisia, where palms grow 15–25 m tall.

The name tells you the fruit the seed came from. A seed-grown palm takes several years to mature, and we do not promise that its fruit will match the parent.

Storing the seed

Date palm seed is orthodox: dried seed tolerates cold storage. Keep unsown seed dry.
