About this species

Quercus semecarpifolia is an accepted species in the Fagaceae family. Its native range extends through the Himalaya and neighbouring parts of Asia to northern Thailand. It is a temperate tree commonly known as kharsu oak or Himalayan brown oak. Mature plants form a substantial crown and carry firm, leathery leaves that may remain on the tree through much of the year.

Also known as: Kharsu oak, Himalayan brown oak, Brown oak, Kharshu, Khasru and Quercus obtusifolia.

Sowing guide

1. Use fresh, sound acorns and sow without unnecessary dry storage; discard material that is visibly damaged or mouldy.
2. Choose a deep pot with a clean, free-draining medium that still holds gentle, even moisture.
3. Set each acorn on its side and cover to about its own thickness, then water thoroughly.
4. Keep the sowing cool to moderately warm according to local autumn or winter conditions, protect it from rodents and avoid waterlogging.

Fresh oak seed should not be allowed to become excessively dry. Germination timing can vary with seed condition and temperature. Label the container and leave the developing root undisturbed rather than digging up the acorn to check progress.

Seedling care

After emergence, provide bright light, airflow and enough depth for the young root system. Move seedlings carefully because early oak roots can be sensitive to damage. Acclimate them gradually before outdoor planting and use local experience when choosing winter protection, moisture and sun exposure.

Kharsu oak becomes a large, long-term tree rather than a compact pot plant. Confirm local climate, conservation guidance and permanent space before planting. Natural variation in germination, leaf form, growth rate and mature size is expected.
